HISTORY
Ustilonja is situated on the delta of river Lonja. It is part of former Totuševina manor and manor of Croatian banus Petar Keglević.
Village Lonja, in its rich history, that reaches in 14 th century, logs Ottoman conquers and movement of the part of village because of changes in Sava's flow!
It records the taping of Western Pirates of Mississippi, where some roles were played by the local people, and the steam ship, attacked by the Indians, was sailing down the river Sava, instead of Mississippi !
As one of the few settlements in the area, thanks to visionary and entrepreneur, Nikola Kireta, Lonja can be proud on electricity even before Second World War.
After the First World War, on initiative of Nikola Zebić, First dairy and cheese dairy was found. Where, up to Second World War, milk from the neighboring villages was collected. After the Second World War Dairy was overtaken by Zagreb dairy and Lonja Community.
This, almost manufacture cheese production lasted up to 1968 when it was aborted due to the movement of production to Zagreb. House where Dairy was founded exists still today.
Tradition of dairy production, and the production of Trapist cheese, in the area of Lonja better known as "Swiss cheese", is firmly tided to Ustilonja, because Nikola Jurković (Bolčević), father of Ustilonja's today's landlady, carried over this tradition to his daughter, so you are able to enjoy this local specialty even today.
HOW TO GET TO USTILONJA ?
By car from direction Zagreba:
Take Highway A3 from Zagreb towards Lipovac. You take off in Popovača, and then you drive the road through Stružec, direction Sisak. Take left turn in direction of Industry zone, Sisak, and after that, left towards village Lonja. You drive on the left bank of river Sava , through villages Prelošćica, Lukavec and Gušće and you get to Nature Park Lonjsko Polje and village Čigoć.
By car from direction Jasenovac:
Take Highway A3 from Lipovac towards Zagreb . Take off in Novska.
By bus - one hour opportunity for sightseeing of Nature Park Lonjsko Polje!
Bus you take from Sisak drives through picturesque villages of Lonjsko Polje: Čigoć (European stork village), Kratečko, Mužilovčica, Suvoj and gives ideal opportunity for sightseeing.
